Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

What is Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT) is a natural therapy in which a person is exposed to increased atmospheric pressure inside an inflatable chamber. The typical pressure reaches between 1.1 and 1.4 atmospheres, which can be expressed as 1-4 pounds per square inch. The increase in pressure allows more oxygen to reach the cells of the body which has many healing and therapeutic benefits.

How does mild hyperbaric therapy work?

According to Henry’s Law of Physics, and increase in atmospheric pressure allows more gas to be dissolved into any given liquid. Henry’s Law is displayed in every can of soda. When soda is canned at the factory, it is put under pressure so that more carbon dioxide can be dissolved into the soda causing it to be carbonated. When the can is opened, the pressure is released. Without the pressure to keep the gas dissolved, the soda will become flat in a few hours.

The same principal applies to oxygen and plasma, the liquid part of the blood. When the body is under pressure, plasma, cerebral fluid (around the brain and spinal cord) and synovial fluid (around joints) will dissolve more oxygen than they would if they were not under pressure. Not only does this increase the amount of available oxygen to the tissue, it allows oxygen to reach areas of the body that would normally be difficult to reach.

What is recommended?

For head injury, forty sessions, sixty minutes each given over 10 to 12 weeks is usually a very good place to start. some may choose to do more after they see improvements and can expect further improvements.

For chronic disease, chronic injury and infections, forty-five to sixty minutes, two to five times per week for a total of 20-40 treatments, based on individual cases and results, are what is recommended. Future treatments would be as required to maintain health and fitness.

For acute sprain strain injury, individual results will vary, but expect considerable healing within five visits. Other therapies offered at our center like natural anti-inflamatories, myofascial work and cold laser can also speed this healing process.

For pre and post surgical recovery, a treatment or two can prepare your body to recover better. After surgery it can help decrease inflamation in tissues that causes pain and swelling. On the coasts it is widely used after cosmetic surgeries to improve results and speed healing. Dr. Anschutz would be happy to consult with your regarding your situation.

To detoxify the body and decrease inflammatory conditions it can vary based on your case. Expect a minimun of 6 treatments in two weeks to jump start your liver detox enzymes (such as superoxide dismutase) that break down inflamatory proteins in the blood.

For Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, Stroke and Autism a minimum commitment of 40 sessions is required due to the time required for the body to heal. These conditions also respond well to certain dietary changes and nutritional supplements needed to rebuild the injured tissue.

In the case of congestive heart failure, the extra oxygen gives the heart an opportunity to rest and rebuild (just between beats!) and when paired with a high quality CoQ 10 supplement over the period of a couple of weeks (8-10 treatments) can improve ankle swelling and the ability to sleep at night,

What does it cost?

Summit of Health operates as a non-participating provide, so payment is due at the time of service by cash, check or credit card. If you request and provide the information we will verify and file your insurance with the understanding that they pay you for any covered services. However, mHBOT is not usually a covered service for most diagnoses.

1 hour sessions when purchased individually cost $75. This would be for the athlete training for a big event or someone wanting to try one session.

When purchased in a package of 10 – 1 hour treatments the cost is $600.

Patient Testimoninials

From B mother of S, TBI survivor

The changes we have seen in S all all been positive. The very first thing we noticed was that he was falling asleep faster at night. His headaches have dropped to nearly none at all. His mood has improved and he is increasing greatly in becoming self aware. It’s like his brain is getting unclogged.

At first S didn’t like the treatments, but after the first few he was totally relaxed and listening to his Ipod, and his CD’s, doing word searches, playing electronic wheel of fortune and even choosing to nap on several occasions.

He looks forward to the treatments becuase he feels the difference in his mind and in his body. We plan on doing the schedule set of treatments again in the fall.

Why does extra oxygen help to heal tissue?

In his book The Oxygen Revolution, Dr. Paul Harch explains that the body has only one way it responds to damage. This one way is through the inflammatory reaction. While many different diseases and injuries listed here may seem unrelated they all involve the inflammatory reaction. Decreased oxygen and blood flow to an area cause an effect called the inflammatory cascade. The inflammatory cascade actually causes the body to destroy it’s own tissues in an effort to begin the rebuilding process. When different systems of the body are involved we get different symptoms, hence the list here.

This inflammatory process further decreases blood flow to the injured area until, we believe, that many of the cells, while still alive, do not have the energy necessary to perform their functions. They cease to do things such as sending neurological impulses or respond to their environment. Putting oxygen directly into the bodies fluids give these cells a chance to fully heal and begin to function and respond. S.P.E.C.T. scans of human brains before and after hyperbaric treatments (both mild and non-mild) show an increase of cellular activity in areas of the brain that low function before treatments.

Why Have I not heard more about this?

Oxygen is not patentable and as such no pharmaceutical company would pay for the research. The research is happening, in clinics all over the country, performed by Dr’s like Dr. Anschutz who believe that anecdotal evidence is as important as double blind studies. But don’t make a mistake and assume those kinds of studies are not being done. Information on current studies can be found at www.harchhyperbarics.com and www.ihause.org . There are also several videos on Youtube of patients who have recovered with HBOT therapy.

Is It Safe?

Yes! The hyperbaric chamber is completely safe. Since our chamber uses filtered ambient air, it can be used regularly without the danger of oxygen toxicity to the body.

The majority of clients report a pleasant, comfortable experience. In addition, mHBOT can be a safe adjunct to most other therapies.

Disclaimer

Although mild hyperbaric therapy has been reported to be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, this therapy is not meant as a cure for any condition or disease, and no therapeutic outcomes can be guaranteed.

At Summit of Health we offer other therapies that can work with mHBOT to improve your results. They include: food allergy testing, clinical nutrition, low force chiropractic, low level light (cold) laser therapy, detoxification and acupuncture.
